N.W.T. legislature approves record $795-million capital plan
The Northwest Territories legislature unanimously approved a record $795-million capital budget for 2027-28 on Nov. 6, about double recent plans. More than half, $424 million, comes from federal contributions. Highways and roads account for $404 million, including the Dehk'e Frank Channel Bridge and Mackenzie Valley Highway. It also includes $80 million for energy infrastructure, $81 million for housing, $71 million for community infrastructure, school planning in six communities and a 34-bed long-term care home in Hay River. Finance Minister Caroline Wawzonek said territorial spending is near past levels but voiced concern about such a large plan in difficult fiscal times.
