Province offers $500,000 heating-fuel subsidy for seven isolated Labrador communities

Newfoundland and Labrador is introducing a one-time $500,000 subsidy to lower heating fuel prices in seven northern and isolated Labrador communities: Rigolet, Hopedale, Postville, Nain, Makkovik, Natuashish and Black Tickle. The point-of-sale discount brings stove oil prices in line with the lowest available rate in Labrador. The subsidy begins when the Public Utilities Board implements its winter fuel price freeze and ends when the freeze lifts in spring. Woodward's Oil will help deliver it to residents, while the Natuashish Band Council will administer it in that community. Premier Tony Wakeham said the measure recognizes realities facing families in isolated communities.
